The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland is actively seeking compassionate volunteers to participate in its impactful "Mutt Mentor" program — a hands-on initiative designed to enrich the lives of shelter dogs and the humans who help them.

This unique mentorship program is particularly beneficial for larger breeds like Natalie, a lovable dog who has spent six months at the shelter receiving heartworm treatment and personalized behavioral training. Volunteers play a crucial role in supporting these dogs through socialization, exercise, and companionship.

Elizabeth Rudd, a dedicated Mutt Mentor volunteer, shared her enthusiasm for the program: “Oh gosh, I mean, for one, I get to hang out with dogs all day — that’s fantastic. I think it’s such an important program. We’re so blessed here to have the resources to work with behavioral and training cases, instead of letting them fall through the cracks.”

Matt Blanchard, the shelter’s Marketing & Communications Coordinator, underscored how vital the program is for the dogs’ well-being — especially those that may struggle to adapt to traditional shelter life.

“Our Mutt Mentor program truly transforms the shelter experience for our dogs,” said Blanchard. “We focus on improving their social skills and helping them transition smoothly into a home environment. That way, when they’re adopted, it feels natural and stress-free.”

The mentorship experience includes structured activities such as trail walks, indoor enrichment games, and even fun outings for special treats like a "pup cup" — all designed to reduce stress and build trust.

Blanchard also noted that volunteers don’t need prior experience to join. “You can start out as a dog walker, and as you gain experience, you’ll progress through different levels of involvement. We guide you through every step.”

With growing demand and dogs like Natalie needing specialized care, the shelter is urging more community members to get involved and make a difference.
