Swim in Peace: The Inspiring Albino Turtle Named Hope Has Passed Away

A tiny turtle born with her heart outside her shell captured the hearts of millions — and now the world is mourning her loss.

Hope, an albino Pinkbelly Sideneck turtle born in 2018, defied all odds to live nearly six years with an incredibly rare and life-threatening condition. Her heart was exposed, beating visibly beneath her chest, an anomaly so uncommon it doesn’t have a formal name in veterinary science. Despite this, Hope lived up to her name — becoming a symbol of strength, perseverance, and inspiration.

Mike Aquilina, who adopted Hope from a turtle breeder friend, provided her with the dedicated care she needed. With a clean, soft environment, limited handling, and constant attention to her health, he gave her the best chance to thrive.

"I made her water extra clean, gave her a soft basking area, and tried to interfere as little as possible," Aquilina shared in a 2019 interview. “The goal was always to keep her heart protected and her immune system strong.”

Hope’s journey was shared across social media, where her story quickly gained traction. Millions of people followed her progress, touched by her will to live and the powerful bond she shared with Aquilina. Her resilience served as a daily reminder for many to hold on and keep fighting, even in the face of overwhelming challenges.

“Now is not forever. If you’re struggling, hang on tight,” read one of Aquilina’s viral posts. “The joy is in the journey. The best is yet to come.”

For Aquilina, Hope was more than a pet. She was his purpose.

“She’s touched people all over the world,” he once said. “She gives hope while also giving me hope. She changed my life in the most unexpected and beautiful way.”

Sadly, on August 11, Hope passed away, one day after being admitted to the hospital for a sudden decline in health. Though she had previously shown signs of recovery during a hospital stay in April, her condition worsened rapidly. A GoFundMe campaign raised over $2,100 to help cover her medical bills.

In a heartfelt video posted on Instagram, Aquilina broke the news of her passing, describing the immense void she left behind.

“Hope was my pride and joy. She gave my life meaning for six years,” he said. “I love you, Hope. I miss you already. I feel broken without you. You gave my life purpose, and because of you, so many others found strength.”

He ended his tribute with words that touched the hearts of thousands:
“Together, we touched the world. I’ll do my best to carry your spirit forward. Until we meet again… swim in peace, baby girl.”
