What happened to Buddy is a brutal reminder of how cruel some people can be — but his story also proves the incredible power of compassion, resilience, and healing.
In April 2021, a dog named Buddy was found clinging to life in Mississippi. His face had been horrifically set on fire, and an extension cord was tightly wrapped around his neck. Once a joyful and carefree dog who posed no threat to anyone, Buddy had become the victim of a heartless attack.
According to WTVA, a child later confessed to the crime, but due to being under the age of 12, he could not be criminally charged.
Buddy was quickly taken in by the Tunica Humane Society, where his long road to recovery began. He was transferred to Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, where a team of compassionate vets began the painstaking work of saving his life.
“His vitals were stable, but we knew we were standing at the base of a tall mountain,” said Dr. Elizabeth Swanson, an associate professor and surgeon. “We focused on keeping him comfortable, managing pain, and addressing each challenge as it came.”
Despite his shocking injuries, there was hope: Buddy had not lost his eyesight. While his eyes remained bandaged and swollen for months, veterinarians believed they were intact. His eyelids would eventually need surgery, but there was a strong chance he could regain vision.
For weeks, Buddy’s upper body remained wrapped in thick bandages as he underwent skin grafts and healing procedures. Burn recovery is always slow and painful, but Buddy surprised everyone with his spirit.
“He's shown remarkable improvement every day,” the Humane Society posted. “He never gives up. His doctors are amazed by his progress, especially with the success of his skin grafts. He's learning basic commands and thriving, despite it all.”
Supporters around the country rallied behind Buddy. His story went viral, drawing love and prayers from thousands who followed every update online. He quickly became a symbol of strength and survival.
Then came a major breakthrough. On August 7, Buddy reached a life-changing milestone: his face bandages were removed, and for the first time in over three months, Buddy could see.
“For the first time, his eyes were open and aware — and yes, Buddy can still see,” the rescue wrote. “It was a deeply emotional moment. His last visual memory had been of the horror inflicted upon him. Now, he’s seeing the world again, filled with love instead of pain.”
Buddy's transformation since regaining his sight has been extraordinary. According to Sandy Williams, director of Tunica Humane Society, Buddy's personality has come alive.
“He's a different dog,” she told WREG. “He's playful, joyful, and loves carrying balls through the hospital hallways. He lights up the entire place.”
A video shared by the rescue shows Buddy joyfully playing fetch — a far cry from the burned and broken dog they first rescued.
However, Buddy still faces challenges. His eyelids need surgery, and he will have lifelong special needs. His skin is sensitive, he will require eye drops, and he’ll need sunscreen protection anytime he’s outdoors.
“He can’t spend long hours in the sun,” Williams explained. “But he’s alive, happy, and surrounded by people who love him.”
Buddy’s miraculous recovery is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when cruelty is met with care. Though he’ll always bear physical and emotional scars, his resilience and the love of his medical team have given him a second chance — and a future filled with hope.
