The breeding season is from March through to June in temperate areas, with males showing off their brightest feathers to potential mates and possible male rivals. A nest is built by the female in an area with dense vegetation where a clutch of up to five eggs is laid. She alone incubates the eggs with the male kicking in to help feed the young once they have hatched.
