There are over 350 known hummingbird species, with new species being described every year – all of which live in the Americas. There also used to be another two species of hummingbird that have gone extinct since they were first discovered in the 19th century. Hummingbirds are their own family, known as Trochilidae. Male Anna's Hummingbird: Male hummingbirds sure are territorial! One day, two of them were fighting for the same space in my backyard.
