Rare Sight: A Baby Great Horned Owl Captured By Hikers While Swimming In Search of Dry Land

Derrick Zuk and his friends were walking through a canyon in Lake Powell between Arizona and Utah stumbled upon a rare sight. According to National Geographic, it’s likely a young great horned owl and still has some of its nestling feathers.
Great horned owls often roost on cliff ledges, so it’s possible the young owl fell into the water from its nest. Seeing an owl swim is unusual, and they have no way to defend themselves while in the water. Owls are unable to take flight while swimming, so they must leave the water and dry their feathers before flying.

Incredible Footage Captures A Sleeping Octopus Changing Colour While Dreaming

An octopus has been filmed changing colour whilst sleeping, and scientists think it might be due to it dreaming. So our eight-legged sea creature friends can dream, who knew? The footage, captured by PBS for an upcoming documentary Octopus: Making Contact, shows the mysterious creature asleep and changing from grey, to yellow, then almost invisible as it camouflages itself against the ocean. Scientist Dr David Scheel imagines what the octopus might be dreaming about. Narrating calmly, he says: "She sees a crab and her colour starts to change a little bit. Then she turns all dark. Octopuses will do that when they leave the bottom. This is a camouflage, like she’s just subdued a crab and now she’s going to sit there and eat it and she doesn’t want anyone to notice her. This really is fascinating. But yeah, if she’s dreaming that’s the dream."
They wrote: "On our way back from tour this morning, we came across this juvenile male Benguela Dolphin, still alive on the beach. "I was not very hopeful, but as soon as he got into water and realised where he was, he took off like a bullet."
Beauty Of An Arctic Wolf Captured In Just Two Minutes

This video of the Wolf Conservation Center has a lot to say about the beauty, character, and value of these iconic animals. "To look into the eyes of a wolf is to see your own soul - hope you like what you see" - Aldo Leopold. Beyond being beautiful, wolves are critical keystone species. By regulating prey populations, wolves enable many other species of plants and animals to flourish. Without predators, such as wolves, an ecosystem fails to support a natural level of biodiversity, and may cease to exist altogether.

The Arctic wolf is a subspecies of the gray wolf (Canis lupus). Arctic wolves inhabit some of the most inhospitable terrain in the world where the air temperature rarely rises above -30 degrees C (-22 F) and the ground is permanently frozen. They are one of the few species of mammals who can tolerate these harsh conditions. Arctic wolves are usually smaller than gray wolves, and also have smaller ears, slightly shorter muzzles, and shorter legs to reduce exposure to the frigid air. They live alone or in packs of about 6 wolves and are usually all white with a very thick, insulating coat.

No other wolf in the world can offer the same coloring as the Arctic Wolf. It is very unique due to the location where it is found. While some species of wolves do have some white coloring, this one is almost completely white. They do offer some aspects of yellow, gray, and black in places though.

The heartwarming clip shows the man picking up the animal before carrying it back to the ocean and waiting for it to swim away. Tour guide Naude Dreyer of Pelican Point Kayaking came to the dolphin’s rescue on Wednesday, when he found it on a beach in Namibia.

Mr Dreyer can be seen gently picking up the dolphin before carefully taking him back to the ocean. The tour guide waits with the creature while it settles and swims away from him. The clip was posted on Pelican Point Kayaking’s Facebook page and became an overnight viral sensation attracting more than three million views. They posted: “On our way back from tour this morning, we came across this juvenile male Benguela dolphin, still alive on the beach.“After a quick assessment and measurements, I attempted to get him swimming again. “I was not very hopefully, but as soon as he got into water and realised where he was, he took off like a bullet. “I’ll do a drive past the same area again later to make sure he hasn’t returned again.” Despite this particular rescue going successfully, Whales and Dolphin Conservation suggest you shouldn’t help in the same way as Mr Dreyer. They say: “Marine mammals are wild. They can carry diseases which are transferable to humans. “They can cause injury by thrashing their tails or otherwise. Do not put yourself at risk of injury.” I think we’re just glad that someone who knew what they were doing was able to assist.

Switzerland Just Banned The Egg Industry From Grinding Male Chicks

Because male chicks are incapable of laying eggs when mature, commercial egg farms around the world often dispose of them by shredding. In late 2019, the controversial practice was banned in Switzerland. The move is due to progress in techniques to determine chicks’ gender in the egg.

According to AP News, the ban went into effect on January 1, 2020. Although the government says the practice of putting live chicks through a lethal “mechanical procedure” has been used by relatively few hatcheries., chick culling through maceration is now banned. Killing chicks by carbon dioxide is still allowed, however. The government added that methods to determine chicks’ gender in the egg are not yet widely available. However, several companies and universities are working hard to invent a “commercial method.” Interested in learning more about chick culling?
The process entails killing newly hatched hicks for the intensive animal farming industry. Shortly after being sexed, the chicks are put through a high-speed grinder, simply because they do not lay eggs and, therefore, are not profitable to companies. Many methods of culling do not involve anesthetics and include cervical dislocation or asphyxiation by carbon dioxide. In the United Kingdom, asphyxiation is the most common form of chick culling. Maceration is the primary method in the United States. What are your thoughts?

As such they deserve our care and respect as readily as our pets do – except in the case of wild animals this often means allowing them to live life in the wild unadulterated. But in some cases, we do need to step in to ensure the health and safety of these animals as well.
With the buoyancy device attached around its midriff, the little fish can once again swim and stay upright!
Sometimes goldfish get bladder diseases or other health ailments that affect their ability to stay afloat and upright. That’s where some old-fashioned ingenuity can help a sick goldfish get better! As one person who made their disabled goldfish a “floating sling” so that she could swim said, “She has trouble maintaining buoyancy on her own. She looks a little silly, but it is better than lying at the bottom of the tank all day!” And Einstein’s owner made him a special fish-friendly life jacket out of recycled tubing after the Fantail Goldfish lost the use of his fins when he developed swim bladder disease. Now the fish can swim around the tank with his friends!

This is an example of one of those times. You see, here we have a tale of a friendship so adorable that it has to be seen to be believed. These two precious souls were brought together and documented by a German professional animal photographer. And we should all thank her for this cuteness.

The owl loves the dog so he goes where the dog goes! Watch him hitch a ride as they enjoy a nice swim in the water. This is definitely one of the most unique friendships we've ever seen!

Can Owls Swim? Matthew Zwiernik, an ornithologist from Michigan State University, says "It's not very common because they have no means of defense once they're in the water." An owl's talons don't make for good propulsion, so once they're in the water, they can't get out until they reach shore. Fortunately this owl has a protector like this awesome dog friendOnce an owl swims to shore, it will typically fluff out its feathers to dry."They'll shake it off," "They'll preen a bit. They'll rouse. They'll go up into a tree and let their feathers dry."

When you give a treat to your chinchilla by hand, have in mind a couple of things. Chinchillas rely most on their sense of smell as their eyes are on the sides of their head so sometimes they can have trouble finding the treat or accidentally nip your finger.
However, when feeding treats you should give them by hand and never add them in the food bowl. Otherwise, chinchillas, as we said are selective feeders, will only pick out the treats to eat and they may wait to eat again to find treats in their food bowl, which is NOT good as it could lead to weight loss and malnutrition. Some treats can be given every day and some others should be given 2 – 3 times a week. Some treats also can be avoided totally and never be given. You should give only one type of treat per day and not one of each type.

I'm too tyred to walk!Tiger falls asleep on top of a tour SUV, uses spare tire as a pillow

Recently a video was posted on YouTube where a tiger falls asleep on the roof of an SUV after climbing onto the vehicle. This exceptional sight was captured on camera at the private game reserve Tiger Canyons which is owned by John Varty.

Everyone in the vehicle appears calm - one of the passengers even had his window rolled down as the tiger grips the tire and cuddles with it. Sanctuary owner John Varty thankfully quips that, "At least he didn't bite one of the other wheels. Then we'd be in big trouble."

Varty continues to drive the vehicle slowly down a dirt road in hopes that the tiger will jump off, which he eventually does. "I couldn't believe it when he started to sleep while we were driving along. That's the first time I've ever known this to happen. I couldn't get him off until I went over some really rough ground that he didn't like," Varty recalled.

Varty also works as a filmmaker and founded the sanctuary in order to "create a free-ranging, self-sustaining tiger population outside Asia," he notes on his website. Tigers are listed as an endangered species in Asia and the geographical area where they can be found has decreased by more than 50 percent during the last three generations.

Although none of the vehicle's passengers were harmed or in any real danger from the sleepy tiger in this amusing video, nothing could be left to chance and caution had to be taken. Last year, one of the tigers on the game reserve mauled Varty, leaving him in intensive care with several puncture wounds and broken ribs. Beautiful as they are, they are still wild animals.

Judge Judy Lets Stolen Dog Run Loose In Courtroom To Identify His One True Owner

The courtroom case you’re about to see is one of the most viral moments to have ever aired on “Judge Judy.”
It all began with a heartbroken man who filed charges against a woman, claiming her dog was actually his dog that had been stolen from him.The woman said she purchased Baby Boy, the small white fluff-ball of a pooch, outside a shopping center for a mere $50. The man, on the other hand, said Baby Boy belonged to him. “This is like my child,” he cried.
The defendant showed Judge Judy a stack of photos and paperwork to prove her case, insisting Baby Boy was rightfully hers. Judy felt something was off, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.In a bold and emotional move, Judge Judy ultimately decided that the only way to identify Baby Boy’s one true owner was for the dog to do it himself! She instructed the defendant to bring Baby Boy into the courtroom, then let put him down on the floor and see who he would run to first. A hush fell over the courtroom as Baby Boy was brought in and given all the control. What happened next made for one of the most heartwarming moments the internet had seen in a long time…

This cute strange looking rescued bird will be released into the wild.Tawny frogmouths and owls both have mottled patterns, wide eyes, and anisodactyl feet. However, owls possess strong legs, powerful talons, and toes with a unique flexible joint as they use their feet to catch prey.

Tawny frogmouths prefer to catch their prey with their beaks and have fairly weak feet. Tawny frogmouths roost out in the open relying on camouflage for defence and build their nests in tree forks whereas owls roost hidden in thick foliage and build their nests in tree hollows. Tawny frogmouths have wide forward facing beaks for catching insects whereas owls have narrow downwards facing beaks used to tear prey apart. The eyes of tawny frogmouths are to the side of the face while the eyes of owls are fully forward on the face.
Maine becomes the first state to ban Styrofoam Containers and Cups

Carryout and coffee will now come in something more eco-friendly than Styrofoam in Maine. The first statewide ban on polystyrene, commonly called Styrofoam, just became law. The non-recyclable, single-use plastic has been the popular choice for takeout food containers and coffee cups because it’s cheap, sturdy (doesn’t leak) and insulating.

The only problem is it never goes away. Like other plastics, scientists estimate it will take between 500 and a million years to break down into tiny pieces, while never fully biodegrading. Unlike other hard, single-use plastics, polystyrene can’t be recycled. And, the resulting micro-plastics are piling up in our oceans and soil. So now restaurants and coffee shops will have to purchase more eco-friendly options or face fines.

Maine became the first state to ban the foam products, including boxes and cups, on April 30. The ban goes into effect January 1, 2021. New York City’s ban went into effect earlier this year, and hundreds of other cities and towns across the nation are now passing similar laws.

Hikers find owl 'swimming' for its life after getting caught in flooded canyon

See rare video of a swimming great horned owl. Hikers walking through a canyon in Lake Powell between Arizona and Utah stumbled upon the rare sight. It’s likely a young great horned owl and still has some of its nestling feathers.
